This highly informative session for parents outlines how to best support your child with their music - both at OSMC and at home. This annual event is held during Term 1 opposite the OSMC office and is led by OSMC tutor Dr. Sally Bodkin-Allen.
This event is free for all OSMC whānau to attend. Morning tea is supplied.
The 2025 date for this event is:
Saturday 15th March, 11.45 am.
Throughout the year, our Saturday musicianship classes break into groups and tour the school with their teacher to investigate different instruments to find their favourites and help inform their decision when choosing an instrument to progress to after musicianship. Friday musicianship students and their whānau are also strongly encouraged to come along to these sessions.
The 2025 musicianship tour dates are:
Term 1 - Saturday 5th April
Term 2 - Saturday 17th May
Term 3 - Saturday 9th August
Our mid-year concert event is a celebration of each class and provides students with an opportunity to develop their performance skills and share their work to date with friends and whānau. Classes perform during their usual lesson hour in the Southland Girls' High School hall. Wednesday & Friday classes also take part (a performance time is given to them in advance by their tutor). The concert is free to attend.
The 2025 mid-year concert date is:
Term 3 - Saturday 14th June.
Our annual instrument expo is a highlight of the year for musicianship students. Led by senior students, each instrument is introduced and demonstrated and then musicianship students and their whānau are encouraged to try out all the instruments! Friday musicianship students and their whānau are also strongly encouraged to attend this fantastic event to support them with choosing the instrument they will progress to playing after musicianship.
The 2025 instrument expo will be held at OSMC in Term 3 on:
Saturday 13th September, 2025. Expo sessions are held during hours 2, 3, & 4 (9.45 am, 10. 45am, & 11.45 am).
In the final week of term 3, our Out of School Music Concert Band combines with the James Hargest College Concert Band and tours the local primary schools across Waihōpai. This year we visited 10 schools over 2 days! (Wednesday 25th & Thursday 26th September).
The Concert Band is open to all string, woodwind, brass, and percussion students to join that are in their second year or longer of learning their instrument.
At our end-of-year concert, all instrument levels combine together to present an item to friends and whānau. Held at First Church, this concert provides students with the opportunity to develop their performance and ensemble skills. Combined class rehearsals take place in the lead up to the concert to prepare students for this event. The concert is a non-ticketed, koha (donation at the main doors as you enter) entry event.
The 2024 end-of-year concert date is:
Term 4 - Monday 24th November, 6.30 pm.
Each year, an Out of School Music Classes Student Representative is elected. The student who takes on this important role on the management committee is the voice of rangatahi who attend OSMC.
Interested students must complete an application form.
Applications for 2025 will open during Term 1.
Following the closure of applications, voting will open for one week. After voting closes the elected candidate will be announced online and their details published on the Tutors page under 'Management Committee' for students to contact.
The Out of School Music Classes Annual General Meeting is open to any interested stakeholders to attend.
The 2025 AGM date and details will be posted here once they have set.
